Main Ingredients
- 4 cups milk
- 5 eggs separated
- ¾ cup sugar
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- ¼ cup rum or bourbon optional
1. In a saucepan, heat the milk until it is hot but not boiling.
2. In a mixing bowl, beat the egg yolks and sugar until they are light and creamy.
3. Slowly add the hot milk to the egg mixture, whisking constantly.
4. Pour the mixture back into the saucepan and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it thickens slightly.
5. Remove from heat and stir in the heavy cream, vanilla extract, and nutmeg. Let it cool.
6. In a separate bowl, beat the egg whites until they form stiff peaks. Fold them into the cooled mixture.
7. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours before serving. Add rum or bourbon if desired.
